Story:

This strap probably elicits a bit of a puzzled response from most who see it. It’s a strange dichotomy of edgy counterculture imagery, fun children’s toys, and a message that blends the two. In creating this art we wanted to see “coolness” in a new light. So often we are confronted with the pressure to fit into a group. For most, it’s easy to conform to the social norm, but for many who feel like they aren’t normal, it feels more at home to find a small family whose common bond is outside of the norm. At our heart though we are seeking the same thing, acceptance. The problem with acceptance is that it often leads us to think or act in ways that run contrary to what we know is morally correct. We excuse our thoughts and actions by comparing them to other members of our community, usually the members that seem to be the most successful members of that community. Whether we are comparing ourselves to the Joneses next door or emulating the coolest punk rocker at the club we aren’t being true to ourselves. In every community, whether mainstream or subcultural, there will be successful people keeping others under their boots, it’s an easy way to get ahead. But taking that path destroys our souls and doesn’t uplift the community. It’s just selfishness and will inevitably leave you broken and alone. There is another way, and while it may be the harder path it is a lot more rewarding and a lot more lasting. People notice the righteous and will stand behind that person.

My hope for you is that when you wear this strap you will remember what kind of person you want to be. Whether you wear a suit and tie to the office or don ripped jeans and combat boots to fit in don’t let that become a façade covering who you really are. You are more complex than your haircut, or the car you drive, or the music you listen to. These aren’t the things that make us “cool”. Cool is a mindset, not an outfit, not an item you purchased. Cool is acceptance of others. Cool is helping others. Cool is being a good person. Cool is being Good to the Bone.
